I am trying to troubleshoot an installation of L2TP VPN on my SBS2K3 network.  I had set this up to work at one point, but that was before I upgraded to ISA 2004 and the expiry of my laptop computer cert.

The issue is around the inability to request a computer certificate for a client computer. I keep getting the error “The certificate request failed. The RPC server is unavailable.” whenever I attempt to request a Computer Cert for the laptop. I am also seeing a “DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XYZ using any of the configured protocols” in my System Event Viewer.  Did some web searching and came across this entry which seemed to be an exact duplicate of my problem. But the solution does not seem to work for me.  Just for the record, I am logged into the domain with domain admin creds, disabled the Wi-Fi connectivity, and am connected using a hard line to the internal network.  Has anyone come across this problem and resolved it?

Is there a documented method for setting up L2TP VPNs on a SBS2K3 network? I was using the excellent instructions in the “Windows Small Business Server 2003 Administrator’s Companion” by Charlie Russel, Sharon Crawford and Jason Gerend, but the relevant section of the book became outdated when ISA 2004 was released for SBS2K3.

Anil, you could also check DCOM security for certificate request interface according to article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903220/en-us
